Jimmy's Story

Jimmy's Story

Jimmy grew up in a working-class home, the son of a Mexican immigrant and a union truck driver, and became the first in his family to go to college. But Jimmy’s life was forever changed just before his final year at UW Law School when a drunk driver took the lives of his mother, father, and little brother - and left Jimmy paralyzed.

After the tragedy, Jimmy vowed to dedicate his life to public service. After graduating from law school and founding a nonprofit dedicated to helping the victims of drunk driving, he decided to run for office. Jimmy was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 2016, and over his four terms in office, he has fought to fix our healthcare system, protect our environment, improve our schools and universities, and so much more. He has also been a passionate advocate for the thousands of disabled Wisconsinites. He is now running to be your next State Senator and continue his work as your progressive voice in the legislature.

Your Progressive Choice

Your Progressive Choice

Jimmy is an expereienced and dedicated progressive who makes decisions based on core democratic values, not political calculations that only serve the wealthy and well-connected. He will fight against the Republicans’ extreme right-wing agenda, while working every day to protect our environment, reestablish workers’ rights, and expand access to affordable healthcare and housing. Jimmy believes that no matter who you are, who you love, or how much money you make, you deserve the same opportunity to succeed.

After enduring tragedy in his own life, Jimmy learned first-hand the importance of providing a strong safety net and legal protections for people who are at their most vulnerable. At the heart of Jimmy’s campaign is a desire to make sure that Wisconsin becomes a more just, a more fair, and a more kind place to live for everyone.

Ask Jimmy

Ask Jimmy

Q. What will your priorities be in the Senate?

A. I want to be your true progressive voice in the Senate. We need to overturn Wisconsin’s criminal abortion ban once and for all, defend the education budget from draconian cuts, protect our environment and waterways, make healthcare and housing more affordable, and ensure everyone has the opportunity to make their voices heard in our democratic system. We need to make our state more open and accessible for the thousands of disabled Wisconsinites. Above all, my priority is to focus on what you care about instead of letting corrupt special interests and Republican extremists ruin our state.

Q. Can you really expect to make an impact in the Senate?

A. Absolutely! I am confident that I have the experience and effectiveness to translate my ideas into successful policy and meaningful, positive change for our community. With four terms in the Assembly under my belt, I know how to navigate tricky partisan politics; I will take advantage of opportunities to work across the aisle, but hold Republicans accountable when they try to take away your rights. There is much to be done - but with your support, I know we can accomplish great things!

Q. Why did you decide to run for the Senate?

A. Republican extremism has reached new heights. Every day, I see narrow-minded, self-serving politicians trying to turn back the clock on so many pivotal issues: whether it's stripping away abortion rights, restricting access to the ballot box, or even stifling free speech and banning books in our schools. We need elected leaders who will confront these bullies, and that is exactly what I promise to do. I have a proven track record of standing up for what is right - including when I took on Republican Speaker Robin Vos when he violated the ADA. I have and will always defend our values and never give you a reason to doubt my resolve.

Q. Are you able to fully represent me in the Senate with your disability?

A. I have no doubt. After I was paralyzed, I completed my law degree and then started a nonprofit that has had a real impact on people's lives. I then proudly served as your representative for the last four terms, successfully transforming the legislature into a place that is more accessible for those with disabilities. You can trust me to stand strong against the Republicans’ radical agenda. I mean, I literally have more steel in my spine than anyone else in the legislature. FDR saw us through the Great Depression and World War II from a wheelchair. I will channel his fortitude as I fight for you.

Q. What are your ties to Dane County and our community?

A. I chose UW-Madison for law school because I love this community. I saw Wisconsin as a place I could put down roots, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made. It was this community that helped me after losing my family - who supported the work I’ve done through my nonprofit, and who put their faith in me as their Representative. I feel lucky and privileged to call Dane County my home and I hope you will continue to support me as I run for the State Senate!
